Art & Science Displays at the Rathbun

Celebrate East Haddam Spring Weekend by stopping by the Rathbun for two amazing displays showcasing some of East Haddam's brightest and most talented citizens. The Library is currently hosting the East Haddam Art League Spring Showcase and the Nathan Hale Ray Middle School Invention Convention Exhibit.

The East Haddam Art League is displaying their annual Spring Show at the library until June 10th. The exhibit has dozens of pieces ranging from watercolor to photography to sculpture and more.

The NHRMS Invention Convention  is in its 7th year. "It is a fun learning program designed to develop, encourage and enhance students' critical thinking skills through invention." The participants are from grades 4 through 8. All of the inventions are imaginative, clever, and on display in the Children's Department this weekend. There will also be a fun ladybug craft for young ones to create.

Free Pediatric Eye-Screenings

East Haddam Community Lions - PediaVision
Free Pediatric Eye Screening
Monday, April 27
10:30am
at the Rathbun Library

The East Haddam Community Lions periodically perform pediatric eye screening of pre-school children, ages 2 through 6 during storytime at the libraries in East Haddam. This service is offered free of charge by the East Haddam Community Lions under the Lions Eye Health Program administered by the Connecticut Lions Eye Research Foundation.
The PediaVision scanner is capable of screening for astigmatism, nearsightedness, farsightedness, lazy eye, misalignment of the eyes and pupil size anomalies in a 20 second scan.  Nearly 20% of children between the ages of 2-5 are found to have a problem and need to be referred for treatment.  The earlier the child’s problem is diagnosed the better their chances to return to normal or near normal vision.
The hand held scanner resembles a camcorder with blinking lights to keep the child’s attention for the brief time needed for the scan.  The scanner is held 3 feet from the child.  It is not necessary to even touch the child.  A complete printout is given to the teacher after the scan to distribute to the parents.
Lions work statewide to reach as many communities as possible with this valuable service. Please view “Lion help save Cross’s sight” on You Tube to see the impact this screening can have…. It speaks volumes.
Lions work world wide to help the visually impaired and to eliminate preventable blindness by diagnosing and treating eye disease and diabetes.  Local Clubs schedule eye screenings, collect old eye glasses, sponsor diabetes clinics and do what ever they can to serve their communities.
For further information on this program in East Haddam,  please contact Sherry Langan at sllangan@comcast.net or 860-873-9282.
